Champions Again: Kurumbas Lift the VA Legends Trophy Unbeaten

There are wins, and then there are statements. Kurumbas Cricket Club made one of the loudest of the season, marching through the VA Legends Trophy unbeaten from start to finish to be crowned champions once again. Every game, every challenge — answered. The lion's roar echoed across the DMV.

Full credit to Legends for organizing yet another superbly run tournament. Sixteen teams battled it out for the title under glorious weather, with amazing food and a superb crowd creating the perfect atmosphere for a full day of cricket. From the first ball to the last, it was everything the local game should be — competitive, festive, and packed with community spirit.

Standing between Kurumbas and the trophy in the final were DC Challengers, one of the most respected sides in the region. Kurumbas lost the toss and were sent in to bat, with the Challengers backing their bowling attack to set up the chase.

It was a cagey start. The Challengers' bowlers came out firing, squeezing Kurumbas for just seven runs across the first two overs. Wickets in hand but runs at a premium, the innings needed a spark. It got an inferno.

That spark had a name: Shehan Perera. In the third over, the Kurumbas captain went into beast mode — launching the ball over the rope again and again to plunder a staggering 34 runs from that single over. In the space of six balls the entire complexion of the final had changed, and the crowd was on its feet.

The fourth over brought no let-up. With Shihan Jayawardena now firing from the other end, the onslaught rolled on — another 31 runs raining down as the pair refused to give the Challengers a moment to breathe. Perera raced on to a brilliant 45, and by the end of the six overs Kurumbas had a commanding 80 on the board. A total to defend, and a statement of intent.

If the batting lit the fuse, the bowling delivered the knockout. DC Challengers built their reply in a slow, steady manner, refusing to panic — but the Kurumbas bowlers were relentless, choking the boundaries and turning every over into a battle for survival. Run by run, the equation crept out of the Challengers' reach.

It all came down to the final over: 25 runs needed, six balls to get them. The ball was handed to Shihan Jayawardena, and he held his nerve to deliver one of his finest overs — cool, precise, and utterly in command. There was no doubt left about who was in charge.

At the final ball, it was done. Kurumbas Cricket Club — champions once again. Unbeaten, unshaken, and unmistakably the pride of the DMV.

But behind the headline moments lies a champion's truth: this was a team effort in every sense. Chamee, Milan, Vippy and Sukesh all stood tall alongside Shehan and Shihan, with each and every player contributing with both bat and ball and stepping up when it mattered most. This was a title that belongs to the entire squad — and that depth, that unity, and that willingness to fight for one another is exactly what makes this Kurumbas side so hard to beat.

The individual honours capped a memorable campaign. Captain Shehan Perera took home Man of the Match for his explosive 45 that turned the final on its head. And Shihan Jayawardena was named Man of the Series — a richly deserved reward for standing up with both bat and ball throughout the tournament, none bigger than that ice-cool final over.
